The Weather Was So Warm

Doug Spitz

The weather was so warm, almost balmy,

that I went boating almost all the way

out to Martha’s Vineyard.

I saw a family of whales going south

(well, perhaps a family but I didn’t stop to ask)

and realized how much life is filling the sea.

I am only a guest here.

The water reflecting the sky above,

the sky reflecting the water below.

For a moment, you can

feel that the planet is breathing.

I feel a deep rest in the timeless moment

of such an impression.

My whole life seems but one breath

in the scale of the earth.

Such insignificance makes me free.
